Epiphone was established over 140 years ago in Turkey and originally produced lutes and fiddles. After production moved to New York in the early 1900s, Epiphone added mandolins, banjos, and acoustics to their line-up. Their first archtops, the Masterbilts, were introduced in 1931. Throughout the 30s and 40s, Epiphone was Gibson's main competition, in terms of archtops, and the company which owned Gibson (CMI) purchased Epiphone in 1957. Since this time, Epiphone has produced the same models of electric and acoustic guitars, such as the Emperor and Wilshire, which made them such a fierce competitor, as well as high-quality, affordable versions of established Gibson designs, such as the Les Paul and SG.
